Atlantic City, New Jersey was once the gambling capitol of the world. It has taken a back seat to places like Vegas and Macau as of late, but they are making a push to get back into the spotlight. For decades the place remained stale and was in danger of going under. The people and the government realized how important this city was, not only for its tourism attraction, but for the revenue it can bring in.
I personally used to frequent Atlantic City casinos quite often as I am only a few hours’ drive away. For the years I spent in the town, it never really changed and I saw it decline each time I visited. In 10 years only 1 new casino was opened and that was the beginning of what Atlantic City has started to become today. A place that rivals other casino towns and gambling Mecca’s of the world and is making a strong push to get back to its “Glory Days”. (Bruce Springsteen reference)
Many new casinos have opened on the boardwalk of Atlantic City in recent years. These include the Hard Rock, Harrah’s and the most recent, Revel. Revel, Atlantic City Casino was officially opened on Memorial Day of 2012 in grand fashion. Famous pop singer, Beyonce headlined the opening and let the world know that Revel Casino was on the map.
This $2.4 billion dollar casino/resort features ocean views throughout the entire place. However it has also brought along some controversy. It is the first completely smoke free casino in Atlantic City and this is much to the dismay of customers and politicians. With so much at stake, the politicians are worried it won’t bring in the revenue since it may turn away many customers. It’s still early to tell how this will all play out, but in my opinion and a smoker for what it’s worth, the casino is well worth the visit and having to walk a few blocks to light up a smoke is worth it.
Along with new casinos, the place is drawing some big stars. We already mentioned Beyonce opening the Revel, who is one of the biggest stars in the world. Resorts Casinos has inked a deal to bring Margaretville and Jimmy Buffet to its casino. And in Vegas style a new light show will adorn the boardwalk.
Perhaps one of the biggest stars Jersey has ever seen will also be bringing his unique style and flavor to Harrah’s Casino. Jersey Shore’s very own Pauly D has signed with Harrah’s to become the official DJ of the casino. For those who have been under a rock for the past few years, Pauly D is the spiky haired, tanned “Juicehead” form MTV’s popular reality show “Jersey Shore“. You will likely find his cohorts along his side. Imagine fist pumping the night away with Niccole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mike “The Situation”.
Atlantic City is quickly becoming a place to visit with many new attractions that are adult and kid friendly as well.
