Reasons Behind Blackjack Popularity

Blackjack has been popular since its inception in 17th century France. The game called "Vingt En-Un", which literally means "21" in French, was played in casinos across France. Though, not the first ancestor of blackjack, it shares some traits with the game of blackjack. Blackjack has always been seen as not just a game of chance but a game of skill as well.

Starting in the late 1950s, statisticians, scientists, and blackjack enthusiasts alike have been trying to beat "the house" with various methods and gaming strategies. Books were published, which became quickly popular and made it to the New York Times Best Sellers lists. With the added media attention, blackjack became a game that people wanted to try their hands and skills at. "Card counting", the calculation of probability based on the ratio of high cards and low cards has been popular, much to the casinos' dismay.

In the 1990s, a group of MIT students were discovered to be counting cards and winning millions of dollars, and were banned to enter any casino. Casinos have different rules for dealers and players. For example, some land-based casinos require that dealers have one hand on a "shoe" and the other in the center of the table at all times. Dealers are also required to draw cards or to "hit" until they reach 17. Although blackjack seems to give a "house edge" or have the casino win most of the time, players get to double down their bet or take an insurance for the dealer's hand. Players also get a split win for certain cards.

This is another reason why players have better odds against the casino to win. When playing online games, follow the blackjack basic strategy. The computer program is developed to calculate the move against any possible 'up' card. An up card from the dealer tells you what you should be doing with your hand.
